thought i'd just mention this in case anyone else comes across the same problem,
when i went to change the thermostat i found there wasnt one there so obviously put one in that i had bought of ebay. the car kept overheating and was led to believe it could have been a faulty thermostat so went for a more reputable company e.g. eurocarparts
the one on the left from ebay the right from eurocarparts, xact same number etc part from the size of the needle thingy
then fitted the part i purchased from there, yet the same problem occurred with the over heating but only when in traffic once driving it was fine. but the car seemed to get upto temperature way to quick for my liking , slightly baffled. :/
turns out when you come to fit the stat have a look at the coolant flange that the needle part of the thermostat sits in
just so you know what the flange looks like
so you can see the hole in the middle
well if you can see through that hole it means you need to buy a new flange , only about £6/7 apparently this , from what i can gather, with the thermostat being spring loaded means that the thermostat isnt actually compressed properly in the housing and therefor doesnt work as it should when its replaced.
hope it helps people, saves going through a few stats and leaving you baffled
